Miami bred artist, Asha Sing is breaking the stereotype of Indian artists as she bridges the gap between Bollywood and Hollywood. This American-born Desi-raised girl plans on uniting east and west cultures through her fusion of Bollywood and American Pop music.
During high school she embraced opportunities to refine her talent. She received recognition for her voice when she competed at the world famous Apollo Theater Amateur Talent Competition in Harlem, NY and placed second by taking a daring step and performing Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You. This made noise in the local media world and she was featured in the Miami Herald, Plantation Forum, and South Asian Times just to name a few. This win also caught the attention of agent Shirley Faison, as Asha was immediately signed with the Carson Adler Casting Agency in New York.
Summer 2010 was a game-changing event when Asha received the opportunity to be a back-up dancer and singer for Shakira at the Premios Juventud 2010 in Miami, FL performing the World Cup song Waka Waka. “Being on stage with Shakira and experiencing first-hand how her cultural background influenced her music hit me. I knew after that weekend it was my culture and ethnicity that was going to help me stand apart” says the artist. She quickly began to formulate her vision of bringing the Bollywood culture to America and gave birth to her fusion of music when she met Grammy winning Producer Paul Ebersold.
The two worked together at Studio Kitchen in Nashville, TN to create four stellar tracks to reflect this vision. She released her first single Mercy on August 13, 2013 along with a music video to “Mercy (Daniel Simmons Remix).” The music video to the Remix is creating a lot of buzz online. She collaborated with California dance company Bollywood America to create a fun summer anthem visual that was not only picked up by Vevo but has also been viewed over 400,000 times! The video is spreading like rapid fire with its infectious beat, sassy message, and catchy dubstep feel.
This multi talented young American with roots in India is now a part of the BMI family along with fellow South Asian Artists A.R Rehman and Jay Sean, as she works to establish herself in the songwriting community. Asha recently was able to exercise her songwriting chops while working with Daddy Yankee to write his recently released single “Lose Control” featuring Emelee. The song was featured on MTV’s new show Washington Heights as well as on VH1’s Hit The Floor.
Asha has graduated this past May from the prestigious Frost School of Music from the University of Miami and is now pursuing music as a full time career. She is off to an incredible start and is sure to make waves as an aspiring artist as she introduces fans to the two worlds she grew up in.
IndieHitMaker exists because artists cannot directly report their live show sales to SoundScan. Only record labels and distribution companies that pay the annual fees and fit the mandated requirements can qualify for this exclusive program. Since most independent and unsigned artists sell the majority of their CDs at live shows, without IndieHitMaker these sales would go unreported and unaccounted for in US SoundScan sales numbers making it next to impossible for industry executives, deal makers, and A&R to discover you. By simply reporting all your sales to SoundScan, you can significantly increase your awareness within the industry. Sell enough and everyone will know when you get on the Billboard Charts.
