Stephen Edwards released his first feature length documentary just this year, but you’ve probably heard his music long before you knew his name. Edwards is one of the most in-demand film and television composers of the time. You may know his work from movies such as Shanghai, I Love You Phillip Morris, Amelia, or the Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club and Southpaw. Or maybe you’ve heard his original songs and compositions in television series like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, ER, Transparent, and Mad Men. Or maybe from his one hundred plus other film and show credits, the list goes on.
But out of all these accolades and accomplishments, Edwards is most proud of… his mom. How do you pay tribute to the one person that truly defined your career? Simple, write a requiem in their honor, and record it with an international symphony and chorus in the holiest of places on the planet, Vatican City. If that’s not enough, document the whole entire process and premiere across National Public Television on Mother’s Day. The work has received high praise from John Williams, perhaps the most acclaimed composer of our day (Star Wars, ET, Harry Potter):
“Your requiem is a lovely work! It seems heart-felt and honest, and contains a delicate innocence…making it touching tribute to a Mother from a loving son.”
Edwards is both an American and Italian citizen, but a Michigan native. While his music education started with training from his mother at a very young age, Edwards studied also at Interlochen Music Camp and Lawrence University. While at University he received the “Outstanding Classical Soloist” award, sponsored by DownBeat Magazine, and also selected by Disney’s All-American College Orchestra National Talent Search.
The soundtrack of Requiem For My Mother, is Edwards’ third commercially released recording, following Piano Music from the Movies, and Ave Maria Mass & Suite For the Americas, a highly regarded 9/11 tribute album that’s been called, “Magnificent” and “A moving tribute.” CD & DVD are available for purchase on the official movie site by visiting www.requiemformymiother.com.
